[Sustainability Week] Falling from the clouds: sustainability in cloud-based software systems
The first event of the sustainability week and what a way to start it off!
During this short sustainability lecture, Vasilios Andrikopoulos will talk about the work he and his team are currently working on. If you are interested in combining sustainability with your studies or just have an interest in general, feel free to stop by!
Abstract: With cloud computing being the de facto model for delivering software to users, a number of concerns are naturally raised about the environmental impact of the data centers that it relies on. Part of these concerns can be framed under the larger issue of the footprint of ICT operations in general, and part of them to the scale of cloud data centers in particular. An especially intricate question in this discussion relates to the multitenancy of these data centers obfuscating the share of responsibility among their tenants. At the same time, this environmental dimension of sustainability is not the only one that should concern stakeholders of cloud-based software systems. The economic sustainability of these systems is also a pressing consideration, with the question of how to cost-efficiently host and run software in the cloud being an open issue for both practitioners and researchers. In this talk we present our recent work on helping industrial partners address these challenges, and discuss our vision for a sustainability-aware architecting framework that is currently implemented as an NWO-funded project.
(Also there are pixels for the event so remember to stop by!)
